What can this sector do?
Reaching zero emissions would require technology not yet available, such as exceptional biofuels or other not-yet conceived innovations. The main goal is to reduce emissions produced in the air.
This can be achieved through increasing efficiency, by focussing on 4 key areas: technology, infrastructure, operations and economic measures.
Modernizing the fleet can dramatically reduce emissions. Modern aircraft are up to 30% more efficient than those built in the 70’s. Minor details can also have a dramatic effect throughout the life of an aircraft; washing engines twice as often can save 1.2% on fuel according to sector-leading Singapore Airlines. While Cathay Pacific say a careful descent approach can save 100kg of fuel per landing. Sector-leading companies also invest in scheduling software, newer aircraft and improve their ground operations.
